Japanese soldiers managed to bring down eight more bodies by helicopter from the ash-blanketed peak of a still-erupting volcano on Monday, before toxic gases and ash forced them to suspend the recovery effort. At least 31 people are believed to have died after a volcano erupted on Mount Ontake on the Nagano-Gifu prefectural border in Japan.

A major earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter Scale struck off the coast of eastern Japan on Monday, according to media reports.The earthquake caused no apparent damage but the Japan Meteorological Agency declared a tsunami alert in Miyagi Prefecture.The quake struck near the east coast of Honshu, said authorities.Japan is struggling to cope with the aftermath of an earthquake and a tsunami that struck on March 11, leaving 18,000 people dead and thousands missing.

Returning to the Olympics after a hiatus of 36 years, Indian women's hockey team showed tremendous fighting spirit and came from two goals down to eke out a 2-2 draw against higher-ranked Japan in their opening Pool B match at the Rio Games in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The Indians, ranked 13th in the world, were trailing by two goals at half time after World No. 10 Japan scored through Emi Nishikori (15th minute) and Mie Nakashima (28th). But the Indians made a valiant fightback as Rani Rampal (31st) and Lilima Minz (40th) scored a goal each in the third and fourth quarters to secure points for their side.
